On Monday, April 6, at 18:30 EET we are delighted to host our guest Prof. Kgaugelo Edward Lekota who will present latest research about #genomic anomalies in bacteria.
Talk:
Prof. Kgaugelo Edward Lekota, "Decoding Genomic Anomalies in the Bacillus cereus Group: A Comparative Genomic Analysis with Bacillus anthracis", North-West University, South Africa
Abstract: The Bacillus cereus group comprises genetically diverse species, some of which exhibit anthrax-like characteristics that challenge conventional diagnostics and risk assessment. In this study, a comparative genomic analysis was performed of atypical Bacillus cereus group strains alongside Bacillus anthracis, complemented by classical microbiological and molecular assays applied to isolates from anthrax-endemic regions of South Africa. Findings reveal shared virulence-associated features and genomic convergence, blurring species boundaries within the group. These results highlight limitations in current diagnostic approaches and underscore the need for integrated genomic and phenotypic frameworks to improve pathogen identification, surveillance, and public health responses in endemic settings.
