YMS Series #23 – Antibiotic resistance prediction

Juni 15, 2026
18:00 EEST
The YMS Series brings together the RSBI community and beyond to engage in discussions on cutting-edge science and research journeys. We especially invite young researchers to attend, offering them a chance to explore diverse research directions, gain inspiration, and discover potential career paths in science.

On Monday, June 15, at 18:00 EEST, we are delighted to host our guest Prof. Mihai Pop and Nathalie Bonin from the University of Maryland, USA, who will present about #antibioticresistance #bioinformatics #genomics.

Talk: "Challenges in the computational prediction of antibiotic resistance"

Abstract:
Antibiotic resistance is an increasing public health threat, with the potential to render many infectious illnesses incurable. Even when certain infections are susceptible to some of the antibiotics in today’s medical toolkit, finding the right antibiotic for treating a patient is becoming increasingly hard as bacteria develop resistance to first-line treatments. Laboratory-based antibiotic susceptibility assays are effort-intensive and slow, so there is increasing interest in combining relatively rapid DNA sequencing with computational tools for predicting the resistance profile of biological samples. In this talk, Prof. Pop and Mrs. Bonin will provide an overview of some of the challenges and opportunities associated with the computational prediction of antibiotic resistance from DNA sequencing data, and will present results from research conducted in Prof. Pop group.
