YMS Series – Female hormons and performance sport

September 30, 2025
16:00 EEST
The YMS Series aims to bring together the RSBI community to discuss science and career experiences. We especially encourage young researchers to attend this series, as it exposes them to diverse research directions and provides opportunities to explore potential career paths.

On Tuesday, September 30, at 16:00 EEST we will hear a talk about why #female #hormons need to be considered during training of performance athletes.

Talk:

Cezar-Fabian Moise, "Data-Driven Insights into the Influence of Sex and Hormonal Cycles on Training and Recovery in Elite Ice Hockey Players", Center for Molecular Prediction of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PREDICT), Denmark.

Abstract: Female athletes are underrepresented in sports science research, with critical physiological factors such as the menstrual cycle often being overlooked. This study investigates the impact of high-intensity training followed by a rest period on proteomic profiles and clinical measurements in elite athletes, emphasizing hormonal modulation in females. Serum and plasma samples from male and female athletes were collected after training and recovery periods. Proteomic analyses of total serum and extracellular vesicles(EVs), combined with clinical and performance data, revealed pronounced sex-specific differences in recovery dynamics. Female athletes exhibited delayed recovery relative to males, with more favorable profiles observed during the follicular phase and in contraceptive users. These effects were particularly prominent in EV protein signatures, suggesting a role for estrogen in modulating anti-inflammatory pathways. Our findings underscore the importance of incorporating sex and hormonal status into personalized training and recovery strategies to optimize athletic performance.
